2005 jeep wrangler review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New long-wheelbase model smoothes ride. introductionthe 2005 jeep wrangler lineup includes a new unlimited model. Introduced late in the 2004 model year in sport trim, the jeep wrangler unlimited is also available in rubicon trim for 2005, bringing added creature comfort to serious off-roaders.  jeep wrangler remains an icon, a symbol of go-anywhere adventure. The interior is spartan. And it doesn't handle very well, so care should be exercised, particularly in the rain. Built along jeep's 'go anywhere, do anything' design philosophy, the rubicon is a 4x4 gem. We found it performed admirably on hell's revenge, cliff hanger, and other challenging trails around moab, utah. Front and rear dana model 44 axles with locking differentials and a transfer case with a stump-pulling 4:1 low-range give the ruby trail capabilities far beyond those of the average suv.  2005 jeep wrangler models come standard with a new six-speed manual gearbox that replaces last year's five-speed manual. lineupthe 2005 jeep wrangler is available in six models: se 17,970); x 20,280); sport 23,140); rubicon 27,365); unlimited 23,895); and unlimited rubicon 28,365). Also new for 2005 is the availability of the 4. 0-liter six-cylinder engine 1,280) as an option. The se is a basic machine. It comes with a padded roll bar, steel half-doors with side curtains, tilt steering column, a mini-console with cupholders, skid plates for the fuel tank and transfer case, gas-charged shock absorbers and p215/75r15 goodyear wrangler all-terrain tires. Air conditioning 895), cloth upholstery 130), and full-metal doors with wind-up windows 125) are extra-cost options.  the 4. 0-liter six-cylinder engine comes standard on all the other wrangler models. More options are available. Also standard are 31-inch tall lt245/75r16 tires on 16-inch aluminum wheels. Otherwise, rubicon is generally comparable to the sport for comfort and convenience equipment.  the two unlimited models mirror the features on the sport and rubicon models, as appropriate, primarily adding the extra interior room allowed by the lengthened wheelbase.  all models in the lineup include a fold-down windshield, removable doors and top, and a weatherproof interior. Drivers may choose the standard soft top or the extra-cost steel hard top or a package that includes both 1,435) in matching colors. The hard top comes with roll-up windows, a rear wiper-washer and rear defroster. walkaroundthe jeep wrangler is one of the most widely recognized vehicles in the world. Its round headlights, jailhouse grille, and square-edged fenders hark back to the 1940 original.  bumpers are black on all models. Fender flares are one of two shades of gray or dark khaki, although body-color flares may be ordered on the unlimited.  rubicon features neutral gray metallic fender flares and other special features to distinguish it from its fellow wranglers. A 22-inch rubicon nameplate is emblazoned on either side of the hood. Heavy-gauge diamond-plate sill guards are bolted to the body sides to protect the rocker panels from damage and dings from rocks and stumps in the backcountry. Goodyear wrangler 31-inch tires are mounted on 16-inch, five-spoke aluminum wheels with a dished face to protect them from debris and obstacles. Generous ground clearance helps the rubicon traverse the trail.  one of the biggest decisions when buying a wrangler is selecting the top. Purists prefer the soft top, a high-quality piece of equipment that can be configured according to the weather. Doors may be removed for the maximum open-air experience. The hard top comes with full-height doors and roll-up windows. Rearward visibility is better, and it's further aided by the rear-window defroster, wiper and washer. Wind noise is greatly reduced. The hard top can be removed, although we haven't tried this. Either top is far easier to remove or install than those of pre-2001 models and provides much better sealing from the elements.  the exterior mirrors are made of plastic, which jeep engineers say holds up better than metal when going off-road. interiorgetting into a jeep wrangler requires a tall step up. (running boards are not available as they'd be vulnerable on rough trails.) once inside, the cabin is spartan but highly functional.  seats and fabrics are comfortable. The easily removable, fold-and-tumble rear seat is equipped with the latch (lower anchors and upper tethers for children) system for mounting child safety seats directly to the structure of the seat. On all models, the interior is weatherproofed, and can be cleaned with a hose, thanks to drain plugs in the floor. The interior light continues to be managed by a switch in the door frame, so a fuse must be pulled to extinguish the light when the wrangler is operated sans doors.  the wrangler remains miles away from luxurious. Recent improvements, however, make the interior more comfortable than it used to be. The mirror automatically dims when headlights shine on it; this bit of luxury technology may sound out of place in a wrangler, but it's an important feature when the top is off. Radio controls are located in the center stack. Corner pods located just behind both b-pillars house interior lamps, providing theater lighting.  the 10-inch longer wheelbase on the unlimited translates directly into more interior room, especially in the back seats and cargo area. Rear-seat legroom is up by two inches over the standard models, and the space behind the rear seat grows lengthwise by 13 inches. The unlimited's towing capacity is 3500 pounds compared with the shorter wrangler's 2000 pounds.  research firm j. Power and associates gave the wrangler high scores for the quality of its interior features (such as the seats, windshield wipers, door locks, heater, air conditioner, and stereo system) a few years back (the last time we checked), and those features have only gotten better since. driving impressionfew vehicles can match the jeep wrangler off road and ce. 2002 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. This means the overall length and wheelbase can vary tremendously, the latter from 120 inches to 157. 4. lineupthree engines are available: the standard engine for the base-level xl is a 4. 2-liter v6 that generates 202 horsepower. A 4. 6-liter v8 rated at 231 horsepower is optional in xl models and regular cab xlt, and standard in all others. A 5. 4-liter v8 rated at 260 horsepower is available as an option for most f-150s. All three cab styles are offered in xl, xlt, and lariat trim levels; supercabs and supercrews can be promoted to ultimate king ranch status, with leather captain's chairs, premium audio, and unique identification.  i love the supercrew, which features luxurious rear-seat accommodations that can be converted into covered cargo storage. Overall length is kept reasonable by using an ultra-short bed that measures just 5 1/2 feet. The bed is a compromise, but it relieves the driver of the daily burden of maneuvering a pickup that's as long as an aircraft carrier. The top-rung lariat supercrew is equipped like a luxury sport-utility, with handsome leather upholstery, power-adjustable pedals and an optional moonroof and rear-seat entertainment system.  for 2002, even base-level xls are air conditioned. Power-adjustable pedals are standard on all lariat models and optional on xl and xlt trim lines. Antilock brakes (abs) are standard throughout the f-150 line, and remote keyless entry is now a standard feature on xlt models.  with colors and options thrown in, the model matrix is huge. And this matrix includes some specialty models.  new for 2002 is the fx4 off-road package, which includes 17-inch cast aluminum wheels with exposed lug nuts, rancho-brand shocks, three skid plates, a 3. 55 axle and p265/70r17 white-outline tires. The fx4 package is available only on 4x4 models, but the package price ranges from $620-$1165 depending on trim level and body style.  the high-performance svt lightning, packs a supercharged 5. 4-liter v8 rated at 380 horsepower and 450 foot-pounds of torque. Specialized wheels, tires, and suspension are calibrated more for handling than for hauling. This limited production image-generator is available only as a 2wd regular cab on the 120-inch wheelbase.  also available for 2002 is a new limited-edition ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew. It features a supercharged 5. 4-liter triton v8 engine, unique styling cues and a new color option: dark shadow grey. The 2002 ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew is the third truck jointly developed by ford motor company and harley-davidson motor company. (it joins two other limited-edition models: the 2000 ford harley-davidson f-150 super cab and the 2001 ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew. walkaroundthe f-150 is a stylish truck, one that pays more serious attention to aerodynamics than either the dodge or gm pickups. It is rounder, friendlier and looks more like a car than the dodge, chevy, or gmc. That may be part of the reason it outsells all other pickup trucks by a considerable margin. The current chevrolet and gmc trucks are still pretty new (they were redesigned for the 1999 model year), but their conservative styling doesn't look as modern as the ford's. The dodge ram has been redesigned for 2002, but retains a retro look that won't appeal to everyone (at least not as intensely as it appeals to its die-hard fans).  the f-150's aerodynamic hood falls away very rapidly from the base of the windshield, so it's easier to see what's immediately in front of the truck; that's handy for maneuvering off road, for parking, and when navigating in tight city traffic. Like the ram, however, its fenders seem to fill small rural roads. In tight quarters, this feels like a big truck.  the 2002 ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew incorporates styling cues of the past with an innovative flair. The front end of the vehicle features a new upper chrome billet grille, clear-lens headlamps and clear-lens parking lamps embossed with the harley-davidson bar & shield. For 2002, a distinct rivet design surrounds the center of the 20x9-inch five-spoke chromed cast-aluminum wheels, complementing the center caps that display the harley-davidson bar & shield. Flame pin striping and chrome accessories complement the overall package. As in the past, the ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew is lowered one inch. It features a specially tuned exhaust system with a dual inlet/dual outlet muffler, ending in chrome 3 1/2-inch 'slash cut' exhaust tips. interiorthe f-150 takes its interior design cues from the company's successful passenger cars, such as the ford taurus and lincoln continental. The designers adapted these cues to the pickup's larger cab. The curves, surfaces, textures, instrumentation and graphics inside the f-150 are more adventurous, more modern, and in some ways better executed than the gm and dodge, big and bold but not outsized for a big vehicle.  the mid-range f-150 xlt has dual air bags with a passenger-side deactivation switch. They offer a lot of interior space for the money. The xlt's cloth seats recline, and a lumbar support on the driver's side provides even more driving comfort.  all ford pickups share another trait: a relatively high ride height, even on 2x4 models. Getting into and out of the rear seats was easy. The rear seats are comfortable and offer good legroom, allowing passengers to slide their feet under the front seats. Adults should be able to ride back there for longer trips. It's also a nice place to change into and out of driver's suits when we go racing.  supercrew's rear seats fold down (and are split 60/40), offering a nearly flat luggage space. It's a great place to put cargo or big dogs. I like putting all my equipment back there when i go fly fishing. Small storage compartments behind the front seats add utility. This is because they use conventional steel leaf springs at the rear.  up front, the 2wd pickups use a coil-spring independent suspension, while the 4x4 versions use a torsion bar front suspension.  power steering is over-assisted, to make it easier to park and maneuver in tight quarters.  we find the brakes on ford trucks to be average in stopping power and average in fade characteristics.  although the optional 4. 6-liter v8 engine is rated 231 horsepower and 293 foot-pounds of torque, we don't think it's as good a performer in many respects as the small v8 engines from gm and dodge. It's a good, solid engine, with millions of examples on the road, and it sounds good at full throttle, but we find it a little duff for all-around street use, and we would certainly find it wanting if we had to haul anything heavy or tow a trailer up a mountain road. For any customer contemplating those kinds of duties, the 5. 4-liter v8 engine is a much better choice. summaryford's f-150 is still among the most car-like of the full-size pickup trucks, with slick looks, pleasing performance, a comfortable cabin, and a proven powertrain.  ford's new f-150 supercrew is the most comfortable of the light-duty crew cabs currently available. model lineup4x2 styleside 120-in. 2013 dodge charger review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. From crankshaft to door handles, everything operates with fine precision and the promise of long-lasting service. Ride quality is very good, and the solid structure soaks up road surface irregularities. All-wheel drive is available for winter traction. V6 and v8 engines are available.  for 2013, a new cold-air induction system and sport-tuned exhaust boot the standard 3. 6-liter v6 up to 300 horsepower with certain option packages. The 292-horsepower version is still standard and, realistically, that's plenty for most drivers. The retro look is a self-confident exercise in sinuous american styling. The reborn charger has been around since 2006. Model year 2011 brought a fresh new look that we like even better than the 2006-10 edition. The original dodge charger was launched as a 1966 model. General lee was a '69.  the interior, however, is anything but old style. A first-rate, 8. 4-inch touch-screen navigation system is coupled with a rearview camera and ancillary controls for climate and audio. The navigation system is sensationally intuitive, transparent, and pleasing to use, among the best we've seen. It's very easy to read and very easy to understand. Underscoring this user-friendliness, the audio controls for volume and tuning are accomplished with old-fashioned, practical radial knobs, easy to operate while driving on rough roads. Rear-wheel drive is standard. The connectivity group for se 495) includes uconnect 4. 3s voice command with bluetooth, auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls and leather-wrapped shift knob. Also optional is an 8-speed automatic transmission 1,300).  charger sxt 28,995) comes standard with the 8-speed automatic and the connectivity group, plus halogen fog lamps, heated power mirrors, dual-zone front climate controls, humidity sensor, led-illuminated front/rear map pockets, front overhead console with dome lamp and universal homelink, 8. 4-inch touch-screen display with uconnect 8. 4 voice command, premium alpine 276-watt audio, 12-way power driver's seat, heated front seats, automatic defog, and remote start. Otherwise it is equipped the same as the sxt. R/t plus 31,995) adds back all sxt plus equipment, including leather covering for the sport seats. It's available only with rear-wheel drive, and paint and interior color choices are limited. The super track pak 400) adds goodyear eagle 1 super car three-season tires, high-performance brake shoes, and unique suspension and steering.  charger srt8 46,250) boasts a 6. 4-liter hemi v8 with 470 horsepower, plus a special srt heated steering wheel with paddle shifters for manual shifting, a new three-mode adaptive damping suspension, an now-standard electronic launch control. Standard equipment hovers somewhere between charger r/t plus and r/t max. The 2013 super bee includes paddle shifters, heated steering wheel, power steering column, automatic climate control, auto-dimming outside mirror, heated cup holders, homelink, siriusxm radio, and power adjustable pedals that get axed to sharpen the super bee's focus. Additionally, two 12-way heated and ventilated power seats are exchanged for a six-way on the driver's side only; upholstery is black cloth with a unique off-set silver stripe. Paint choices are limited to white, black, or plum crazy. Options are more limited as well.  optional all-wheel drive 2,500) for sxt, sxt plus, and most versions of the r/t includes upgraded brakes, unique suspension tuning and 19-inch rims wrapped with 235/55r19 all-season tires.  the rallye appearance group 1895), available only on rear-wheel-drive sxt and sxt plus, upgrades the v6 to 300 horsepower and dials the suspension and brakes up to the r/t level. Paddle shifters, sport seats, a deck lid spoiler and 12-channel beats by dr. Dre audio are also included; and it all rolls on 245/45r20 tires on 20-inch aluminum wheels painted to match the body. The blacktop package 1995) adds the same upgrades and equipment to the same models, but with blacked-out wheels and grille.  from there the possibilities expand dizzyingly, with pages of options and packages. Most are available only on certain models. Among them: driver convenience group adds heated and ventilated front seats with driver memory, power-adjustable heated mirrors with memory, power-adjustable pedals with memory, power tilt/telescoping steering column with memory. Navigation group includes uconnect 8. 4n voice command with garmin navi, siriusxm traffic, siriusxm travel link, and parkview rearview camera.  safety features on all dodge chargers includes electronic traction control (tcs), electronic stability control (esc), anti-lock brakes (a.

2013 ford escape review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, featuring fuel-efficient ecoboost engines. introductionthe 2013 ford escape is a total redesign that moves the top-selling compact suv into the times, with high-tech small engines, a smooth 6-speed transmission, aerodynamic front styling, and electronic wizardry. Ford claims 11 features exclusive to the escape in the compact suv class, everything from a capless fuel nozzle to torque vectoring control, which helps the escape corner more securely.  gas prices have fueled the compact suv market (in europe it's quadrupled in the last decade), so this is a class that's important to ford's ongoing rebound, and they've pulled out all the stops to make the escape good.  fuel mileage varies from an epa-estimated 23 city/33 highway mpg with the 1. 6-liter front-wheel drive escape to 21/28 mpg with the 2. 0-liter all-wheel drive. We drove both versions and fell below those marks, however, averaging 22. 7 mpg in the 1. 6-liter and 19. 7 mpg in the 2. 0-liter, while driving them spiritedly. That's still better than a comparably equipped honda cr-v or toyota rav4, and good enough that the escape hybrid has been abandoned.  the 2013 escape lineup features three engines, including the returning tried-and-true 2. 5-liter, less powerful and efficient but with a lower msrp than the new ecoboost engines. There's a 1. 6-liter making 178 horsepower and 2. 0-liter making 240 hp, both twin-turbos with direct injection and twin independent variable camshaft timing (ti-vct), although having different designs.  this review is a tale of two escapes, because we found the 1. 6-liter fwd to feel completely different from the 2. 0-liter awd. The 1. 6 is quick, lively and visceral, a blast to drive. The 2. 0-liter awd feels more grownup, civilized, solid, heavy. The chassis is 40 percent stiffer, and the ride is smooth. The interior materials are soft, and the plastic high quality. Rear legroom is decent, at 36. 8 inches, and rear climate control is standard in all but the base s model. There's excellent cargo space, 68. 1 cubic feet behind the first row and 34. 3 cubic feet behind the second row, and the standard 60/40 rear seat folds flat wonderfully fast, with one lever.  the nose of the new 2013 escape is distinctive, sort of aero stubby, with the blue oval emblem in its wide narrow grille to say it's a ford. Although the escape emulates its big brother the explorer suv, its new nose more resembles its little brother the focus hatchback. The hood has nice character lines, and the headlights sweep sharply back and up into muscular wheelwells.  one clever innovation that others are already copying is an available magic release for the liftgate. The new version, as they say, is simpler and the screen is cleaner. And to be sure, we have, at times, gotten it to work for us. Last but not least, the price for the escape has actually come down. It adds ambient lighting, remote start, premium leather, hid headlamps, power liftgate, silver roofrails, backup sensor, upgraded sony sound system with hd radio, and 19-inch painted alloy wheels.  standard safety equipment includes advancetrac traction and stability control with roll stability control, curve control, torque vectoring control, two-stage frontal airbags, driver knee airbag, side airbags, abs with brake assist, tire pressure monitor. walkaroundthere's no mistaking that the 2013 escape is a new car, and it's got the blue oval in its wide narrow grille to say it's a ford. Its nose is more like little sister focus, rather than big brother explorer. Aero and almost stubby, looking like it's meant for the business of efficient hauling. Character lines on the hood suggesting a cowl. The headlights are sharply angled under sheetmetal speed lines like eyebrows, and sweep back and up into the muscular wheelwells.  the bottom two-thirds of the face is a gaping black mouth in split fascia. It conceals a ford innovation, sensor-controlled shutters behind the grille that regulate air into the engine for optimum efficiency and maximum fuel mileage.  the rear end doesn't keep up with the new slick front. It looks big and bulky for the size of the car, with lines going in three directions; it's as if the sheetmetal were shaped to match the taillights, including the indent for the license plate, like an upside-down triangle with the point at bottom chopped off. The standard dual exhaust is cool with the pipes back there, but the cladding in gray looks like a big silver lump hanging out the back.  but there's something hiding under that cladding that's great. It's a first we like, and would buy.  we also like that overall on the three models, there's lots of black eggcrate and not so much chrome. Don't like so much the gray or black plastic cladding that surrounds every model. The 19-inch alloy wheels try way too hard to look out there, while the steel 17s on the base se are the least ugly. interiorthe rugged fabric seats are the best! And since the available myfordtouch remains problematic (we'll get to that), those excellent seats open the door to happy purchase of the s model. Gauges are clean and attractive with pretty blue needles. Unlike the expensive jaguar, ford's rich former sibling, there are actual fuel and temperature gauges. There's a small rectangular window for information, scrolled through using arrows and a dial on the steering wheel, like all fords, and like jaguar, the shared switchgear remains.  the turn signal sound is a classy jaguar-like dink dink dink. Great job, there.  a small shift lever is dropped down out of the way. There's a selectshift button on the side of the lever, controlling manual operation of the automatic transmission. We've complained about this same button on the mustang Climate Control✔ Cruise Control✔ Remote Start✔ Alloy Wheels

2005 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New models expand superb new lineup. introductionford f-150 has been the best-selling full-size pickup for 27 consecutive years, and it's the most important, most profitable vehicle ford makes. Last year ford threw away the old formula and created a new f-150 from the ground up. At the top is a new king ranch model lavishly outfitted in castano leather. At the bottom is a new v6 model available with an automatic or manual transmission. An inexpensive work truck model has been added as well. In between is the industry's widest variety of body configurations: three cab styles, three bed lengths, two bed styles, and a choice of v8 engines. The f-150 comes equipped with dual frontal airbags designed to deploy according to the severity of the crash and who or what is occupying the seat. The xl, stx, xlt, fx4, lariat, and king ranch each boast their own interior style and features. Engines, suspensions and cab configurations are designed to meet specific needs. Xl is readily identifiable by its black grille and fascia and 17-inch steel wheels, though it comes with chrome bumpers. Xl is available in regular cab or supercab (extended cab) styles. An f-150 xl 4. 2-liter v8 regular cab 2wd automatic short wheelbase retails for $21,455, but a v6 manual will lower that price to $19,610; a long-wheelbase 4x4 v8 automatic supercab is priced at $29,690. (manufacturer's suggested retail prices are subject to change and do not include the destination charge of $795.)  stx is sportier than the xl, with a body-colored grille-surround for the black bar grille, and 17-inch cast aluminum wheels. Stx comes in styleside (flat) and flareside (fendered) body styles, in regular cab or supercab, with either a 6. 5-foot or a 5. 5-foot cargo box. An audiophile sound system with subwoofer and six-disc cd changer is optional. Stx starts at $22,285.  xlt is the most popular model, nicer and better-equipped than xl though not as luxurious as lariat. It comes with a honeycomb grille that sets it apart from the other models. Xlt comes in regular cab, supercab or supercrew, with a choice of 5. 5-, 6. 5-, or 8-foot bed lengths, and styleside or flareside body styles. A premium cloth interior is standard on the bench seats or optional captain's chairs. The xlt instrument panel gets more flash than either the xl or stx dash. Supercab, as well as supercrew versions, get power windows for the rear doors. The xlt also features an overhead rail console system that the owner can tailor to his or her needs. Fog lamps come standard on 4x4 xlts. An xlt supercrew 4x4 5. 4-liter v8 automatic retails for $35,275.  fx4 is a special off-road model. The interior features chrome trim and markings, and a floor shifter. Fx4 is available in regular cab, supercab, and supercrew body styles, with either 5. 5-foot styleside or 6. 5-foot flareside or styleside bed designs (no 8-foot bed). The standard engine is the 5. 4-liter v8. The fx4 has its own instrument package as do the rest of the models, with carbon mesh accents on the metallic dashboard. Captain's chairs in cloth or leather are optional, and 18-inch cast aluminum wheels are standard. An f-150 fx4 supercrew retails for $34,605.  lariat is the luxury model. It has its own grille design and comes standard with 18-inch wheels. Lariat features black-on-cream instruments, lots of wood trim and brushed metal, a multi-function steering wheel, and a shiny floor shifter mounted in a floor console. A power 40/20/40 split bench seat with seat memory is standard, along with power-adjustable floor pedals, an in-dash message center, and climate control. Heated power leather captain's chairs are optional. Lariat 2wd models are available in all three body styles, but 4x4 versions are only available with styleside fenders. An f-150 lariat supercrew 4x4 starts at $35,875.  king ranch features rich castano leather designed to capture the spirit of the historic texas cattle ranch. It comes as a supercrew distinguished by with a color-coordinated grille, arizona beige running boards, and other special trim. Inside are power-adjustable and heated captain's chairs in front, a 60/40 split bench seat in back, and unique interior tri. walkaroundredesigned for 2004, the ford f-150 looks much more manly than the previous-generation models. Its tall shoulders, bold front end and crisp lines give it a more utilitarian look that leaves no doubt that this is a serious truck. It's at least as stylish as the much-heralded dodge ram, but is totally different. In fact, the f-150 has a unique look, no small feat when designing within the hard parameters imposed by a pickup. In short, we think the new f-150 is a great-looking truck.  the f-150 has picked up styling cues from the handsome super duty pickups, including the sharp cut in the forward part of the door, allowing a clear view of the massive outside mirrors. A high beltline gives the truck visual strength and makes occupants feel more secure. The roofline is somewhat reminiscent of chopped-top custom street trucks.  the whole nose is shaped more squarely than the previous generation, which featured more feminine, more car-like curves. The grilles are larger and bolder. The front fascia wraps around to the fenders for a precise, sophisticated appearance. The bodyside and cargo box sheet metal is chiseled, though it looks more slab-sided at the same time, a theme that carries through the tailgate, giving the f-150 an upscale, utilitarian look that's very appealing.  the different trim levels are quite distinctive. Just one example: xlt and lariat have a honeycomb grille (black on xlt, brushed-nickel on lariat), while xl, stx, fx4, and king ranch use a bar-style grille.  practical considerations are a big part of the design, and some of this can be easily seen. Every bed, no matter which length or style, is two inches taller than previous-generation's beds to give more margin when hauling larger cargoes. The supercab (extended cab) doors are larger than the vestigial doors on the standard cab. At the other end of the spectrum is the king ranch, which evokes images of montana and cowboys. Lariat comes with every known amenity.  we found the xlt's front bench seats attractive, but they were flat and lacked support. The front bench is split three ways. They also looked great, trimmed in black leather with light gray stitching. Adjusting the power seats may be a little awkward for drivers with big arms because the clearance between the door armrest and the seat is a little tight; rake adjustment on the power driver's seat is manual, and raking it forward can be a bit awkward. The center console between the captain's chairs is deep and holds a lot of stuff and features a pair of big, solid cup holders. The floor shifter for the automatic works very well.  the radio and hvac controls are plain but straightforward and easy to operate. Giant mirrors afford an excellent view rearward. 2012 chevrolet cruze review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Improved fuel economy. introductionthe chevrolet cruze is an excellent choice among compact sedans. It's the best small car gm has offered in north america in decades. More important, it's among the best cars in its class.  fuel economy is improved for 2012, and the list of standard equipment has grown longer, especially in the mid-range lt level. Otherwise, the 2012 chevrolet cruze is unchanged from 2011.  launched as a 2011 model, the cruze replaced the sturdy but boring cobalt, and represented a great leap forward in technology, features and appeal. The cruze was developed jointly by gm tech centers in asia, europe and the united states to battle compact competitors such as the hyundai elantra and kia forte, the best volkswagen jetta in years, and perennial leaders like the honda civic, mazda 3, and toyota corolla. By the quality of materials, fit or function, it surpasses nearly all its competitors. As with most cars in this class, the cruze is front-wheel drive. Both the manual and automatic are 6-speed-transmissions, which is rare in this class. With the 1. 8-liter engine the government rates it 25/36 mpg with the manual, 22/35 mpg with the automatic. The 2012 chevrolet cruze eco rates 28/42 mpg with the manual, 26/39 mpg with the automatic.  the chevrolet cruze might be the smoothest, quietest compact offered in the united states. Ride quality is outstanding, yet the car is nimble, balanced and handles exceptionally well. Its steering is powered by electricity to save fuel. Underway, the steering feels sharp, with decent feel. The cruze comes standard with a long list of safety features, including advanced electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, and a full complement of 10 airbags. There are knee-protection airbags for front passengers, side-impact airbags for rear passengers, and head-protection curtains with rollover deployment. Every cruze comes with gm's onstar telematics system, including a six-month subscription for automatic accident response and other services, a great safety feature.  among the 2012 cruze models, the cruze eco delivers the best fuel economy. Its aerodynamic features, including grille vanes that close at highway speeds, help it slip through the air more easily, and it weighs more than 200 pounds less than other models. To achieve its superb fuel economy, however, the cruze eco sacrifices performance, resulting in slower acceleration, longer stopping distances, and poorer handling than the other cruze models.  the cruze ltz comes swathed in leather and loaded with technology. The cruze ltz is available with a full-feature navigation system, rear park assist, concierge services, premium pioneer audio and remote starting. For that kind of money, the alternatives include larger, very nicely equipped midsize sedans such as the ford fusion, honda accord, hyundai sonata or nissan altima. Cruze ls comes with air conditioning, power windows, power door locks with remote keyless entry, floor mats, and six-speaker audio with single cd, an auxiliary jack and xm satellite radio. The standard wheels are 16-inch steel.  cruze eco 19,245) is optimized for fuel economy. It's powered by a smaller, 1. 4-liter turbocharged engine that delivers the same 138 hp as the base engine, with an increase in torque to 148 lb-ft. It's lighter than other cruze models, with aerodynamic aids that make in slipperier through the air, and low-rolling-resistance tires on 17-inch alloy wheels. The 2012 cruze eco comes with bluetooth phone connectivity, usb port, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, cruise control, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.  cruise lt 18,475) is powered by the same frugal turbocharged engine plus body-color power side mirrors and all the new goodies that have been added to the cruze eco. Sixteen-inch machined-face alloy wheels are standard on 2012 cruze lt models. The 2012 cruze ltz also comes standard with fog lights, keyless entry and keyless start.  cruze rs is an ltz with an rs appearance package 595), which includes unique bumpers, rocker moldings, and a rear spoiler. A similar package for the lt2 695) adds all that plus fog lights and racier instruments. Navigation 995) is available for lt2, ltz, and eco. Other options include a 250-watt pioneer audio system with nine speakers 445), a power sunroof 900). The eco and lt1 can be spruced up with a driver convenience package 495) that includes a six-way power driver's seat, rear park assist, and remote start. (all prices are manufacturer's suggested retail prices, which do not include destination charge and may change at any time without notice.)  safety features include front, side-impact and knee-protection airbags for front passengers, rear side-impact airbags and full cabin head-protection curtains with rollover deployment. Gm's onstar telematics are standard, with automatic crash response and other services free for six months. Other standard safety features include stabiltrack electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes (abs), front seatbelt pretensioners, daytime running lights (drls) and the federally mandated tire-pressure monitor. walkaroundthe styling of the chevrolet cruze is handsome and nicely proportioned.  the cruze is large, as compact cars go. Measuring 181. 0 inches bumper-to-bumper, on a wheelbase of 105. 7 inches, the cruze is slightly larger than most of its competitors, including the honda civic, toyota corolla, and the all-new 2012 ford focus.  cruze is more angular than other recent chevrolet sedans, including the popular malibu. Its front end mimics the volt plug-in sedan with a prominent chevrolet bowtie logo. The headlight housings are large, sweeping upward and around the front edges of the car.  the roofline arcs subtly from its steeply raked windshield through fast-sloping rear pillars, creating a generally sporty profile. Its wheels are pushed out to the corners of the car, with minimal overhang. No, this compact sedan doesn't break new ground or wow with its curves. But it's tidy and quite confidant looking, and the package generates a feeling of quality and solidity. Wheels range from 16-inch steel with plastic covers on the base ls to spoked 18-inch alloys with low-profile tires on the loaded ltz.  the cruze eco is a slightly different beast, because it's designed to be chevrolet's conventional-engine fuel economy leader. The differences start with 42 steps intended to trim weight, right down the size and location of welds in the body. As a result, the eco tips the scales at 3,009 pounds, or 214 pounds less than the mid-level cruze lt. Cruze eco adds a host of aerodynamic tweaks, including some adapted from the chevrolet volt. These start with active grille shutters that close at higher speeds, blocking much of the grille surface when the cooling demands of the engine allow it, and smoothing air flow over the front of the car. The eco also sports a lower front air-dam extension, plastic panels that cover large portions of the underbody and a carefully crafted rear spoiler. It's finished with low-rolling-resistance tires on specially designed rims. That means a bit less braking performance or grip through the corners, but it also means less friction when the eco is cruising along for better fuel economy. interiorthe chevrolet cruze is roomy inside, with ample dimensions in most directions. The cabin is finished nicely with quality materials. Sound deadening measures result in quiet operation. Overall, the cruze cabin delivers an excellent balance of quality, coziness and space to breathe.  cruze is near the top of the class for the look, fit and feel of the materials inside. The seams join with tighter tolerances than those in many other cars, including some of those a class or two above. The textiles and plastics are rich, appealing and nicely grained, and the metallic trim looks good. The fabric used for the door inserts matches that used on the seat.

2012 mazda mazda3 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Skyactiv technology improves fuel economy. introductionthe 2012 mazda 3 takes a leadership role in automotive engineering with what mazda is calling skyactiv technology, 'an engineering philosophy that starts with a blank slate and open mind.'  the big change for 2012 is the introduction of a new 2. 0-liter engine that gets mazda's skyactiv treatment, delivering a terrific 28 miles per gallon in the city, 40 mpg on the highway. In fact, during one good run with that engine, we got 43. 7 mpg. The skyactiv engine runs on regular gasoline.  the 2012 mazda3 lineup features two new skyactiv transmissions to go with the skyactiv engine: a 6-speed automatic and 6-speed manual. That big grin that's been fixed on the face of the mazda3 for the past two years has been wiped off, replaced by a smile that's more reserved.  because the mazda3 was redesigned for 2010, including a lighter stiffer chassis and new interior, there aren't a lot of other changes for 2012.  for 2012, the old 2. 0-liter engine remains in the base model. Not by hard tires, space-saving spares, or aerodynamic hubcaps. And 'their 40' refers to hyundai elantra, ford focus, chevrolet cruze, and honda civic, competitors that also reach 40 mpg, in certain models. It's smoother, prettier and more aerodynamic, as the front fenders are also tweaked, puffed out forward of the wheels. The sedan has a 0. 27 coefficient of drag, and the five-door is 0. 29 cd, strong numbers for a hatchback.  there's one change from the interior of the 2011 mazda3, satin rings around the three climate knobs, for a reason mazda actually tested with human beings. Recognition speed and accuracy, and that means less distraction. Every single control on the mazda3 instrument panel is intuitive and easy to reach and use. The center stack is clean, the gauges clear, and digital information accessed by a thumb scroll on the steering wheel. Mazda3 comes standard with steering-wheel controls.  the mazda3 sedan's trunk has 11. 8 cubic feet of space, and the hatchback has 17 cubic feet behind the rear seat. Both come standard with 60/40 split folding rear seats, and they fold nearly flat, so the cargo space can be expanded enormously. In a pinch, the sedan can carry most of what the hatchback can.  in a day of hard driving on the angeles crest highway and on some mountain roads in southern california, we couldn't find a flaw in the 2. 0-liter skyactiv powertrain. We tested it hard, and it worked.  the 2012 mazda3's 2. 0-liter skyactiv engine makes 155 horsepower and 148 foot-pounds of torque; good hp, excellent torque increase for the 2012 models. At 70 mph the engine spins at a leisurely 2200 rpm, smooth and silent. With the 6-speed manual, it runs 70 mph at 500 rpm more, still can't really hear it.  government fuel economy estimates for the new 2. 0-liter skyactiv engine were not available when this was written. Mazda officials place it at 28/40 miles per gallon. We got 29. 5 mpg driving it hard over the curvy 4910-foot-high angeles crest highway east of los angeles, and 43. 7 mpg returning to the city mostly on the freeway, running 65-70, accelerating and decelerating with the fast flow of traffic.  the 2012 6-speed automatic will downshift aggressively, and upshift at low rpm; few do that. The skyactiv goal was to make it upshift as fast as a twin-clutch automatic manual, and 15 milliseconds is the result.  the 2012 6-speed manual transmission also went skyactiv. This goal was to make it feel like the miata mx-5 gearbox. Bushings were changed to bearings, shafts re-splined, and oil reservoirs shrunk and moved, all to shorten the throw of the shift lever, from 50mm to 45mm, without making it feel heavier. Shortest throw of any passenger car, claims mazda.  the suspension on all 2012 mazda3 models has been tweaked to deliver a more european feel. We ran a lot of harsh patchy pavement on curvy roads, and it wasn't quite a sport sedan, but the feedback was direct, driven hard with the 6-speed automatic transmission in manual mode. The harsh patches never made the ride uncomfortable.  as for the 2. 5-liter engine, with 167 horsepower and 168 pounds of torque, it gets the job done with room to spare. The best happens when the tachometer swings through the 4500-4800 rpm range and keeps pulling to near redline. It climbs hills confidently and cruises on the highway effortlessly. For 2012, the bose 10-speaker surround sound system has been added as standard equipment.  options include rain-sensing wipers and bi-xenon headlamps, offered in only one other car in the compact segment; also dual zone air conditioning and 8-way power driver's seat, offered only by a few others.  safety equipment on all mazda3 models includes dual front airbags, front side airbags, curtain side airbags, active front head restraints, tire-pressure monitor, and anti-lock brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution. Optional safety equipment, in the technology package, includes a blind spot monitoring system, adaptive headlamps and led taillamps. walkaroundthe 2012 mazda3 has been changed in the nose and a little bit in the rear bumper, and there are great new wheels. Mazda has wiped the smile off the face of the mazda3, or at least subdued it. It's like when meg ryan took the silicone out of her lips, she looked a lot better. If skyactiv were ruthless in its rule, they would be erased so the nose is more aero, but, hey, that's a bit too prius. The sedan's coefficient of drag is now 0. 27 cd, with the 5-door at 0. 29 cd, great numbers for a hatchback that isn't also a fastback (like the audi a7). The rear bumper on 2012 mazda3 i models is cleaner and body-colored now. New 16- and 17-inch alloy wheels for 2012 are sporty and handsome. Thanks in part to those wheels, the cliche that it looks like it's moving when it's standing still is true. interiormazda is the manufacturer we long for, when we complain about user-unfriendliness in the cabins of other cars, not to mention the distraction quotient. There are few changes from the interior of the 2011 mazda3, but the changes for 2012 have a reason.  the mission: eliminate distraction, so that the driver can concentrate on driving. Mazda means it, too many others mouth it without studying it. With mazda being neck-deep in racing, they know how to take up less of the driver's attention with necessary gauges and controls. Few if any other manufacturers act with such careful logic. Not ford, with the new focus and its optional and problematic myfordtouch. 2010 honda cr-v review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Fresh new looks, with better power, better economy. introductionthe honda cr-v is among the best of the compact suvs and it's hugely popular.  for 2010, honda cr-v boasts significant changes. The 2010 honda cr-v has been re-styled, with a look that's smoother and more confident. The back seats fold perfectly flat and without the holes that can be hazardous to dogs. Built on a unit-body structure, the cr-v is considered a crossover. New for 2010 are a usb audio interface for the stereo, and automatic (on/off) headlights. For crash avoidance there are antilock brakes (which let the driver steer during panic stops); electronic brake-force distribution (which optimizes braking power front-to-rear during emergency stops); brake assist (which senses impending emergency brake application and boosts pedal pressure); vehicle stability assist (honda's electronic stability control system that attempts to minimize skidding in turns); and tire pressure monitors (which warn of dangerous drops in tire pressure). walkaroundthe honda cr-v presents a new face for 2010. The individual changes are all subtle, but they add up visually. Starting from the top and working down, the cut-line between the hood and grille has been moved up to where it's level with the top of the grille opening, rather than reaching down around the opening as before. The upper grille itself has been simplified: the centered honda h-logo remains, but it's now supported by a single, slim chrome blade, in place of last year's heavy-looking chrome double bar. The lower grille has surrendered its horizontal slats in favor of a black honeycomb texture. A piece of bright trim helps define its lower boundary on ex and ex-l models.  below that, the dark-plastic ersatz skid plate remains, but it's been dialed back considerably, leaving room for an actual body-color bumper beneath the lower grille. Funny how the same treatment seems to make the back of the cr-v fussier, albeit only a little. But more than any of the body changes we like the cr-v's new alloy wheels: with their five elegantly slim double spokes, they make the old seven-spoke wheels look downright dowdy by comparison.  if nothing else, the new front end does an even better job of pulling the cr-v's visual mass downwards, reducing its perceived height. Unchanged are the large, sharply angled headlight housings that crowd the upper grille and blend down into the lower air intake. Stout fender flares stretch out to wrap tightly around the tires, giving the new cr-v a sturdy, planted stance.  the side aspect, unchanged except for the new wheels, shows most clearly the cr-v's departure from the more common boxy, mini-suv look. Starting from the gently rounded hood, the relatively fast windshield flows into a roofline that drops ever so slightly as it passes over the sharply tapered glasshouse, ending at the tailgate's top edge, which itself is pulled forward to a point almost directly above the rear wheel well. A strong character line runs from the top of the front wheel well back beneath the full-round door handles to bifurcate the side marker lens of the rear taillight. To us, it looks a little like the mercedes-benz r-class in the overall outline.  above the new rear bumper, the cr-v's hindquarters still present more of the classic suv look, with a trapezoidal backlight bookended by the trademark cr-v high taillights and atop a fairly tall and relatively broad, high-relief tailgate panel. The oversize license plate recess will accommodate almost any country's registration telltale. interiorthe interior of the honda cr-v focuses on function, with a bit of style tossed in to make things interesting. Everything is in its place for the most part, and everything feels the way it should. Quality of materials and fit and finish overall live up to honda's standards.  for 2010, seat fabrics are new, and there's more bright trim for a cheerier atmosphere without overdoing it. Conversely, models with ivory upholstery now come with a darker-colored (read: dirt hiding) carpet. We particularly like honda's subtle re-take of the cr-v's big, upright interior door handles: the upper attachment point now looks like a miniature of the lower one, and in between is a rubberized grip. The center folding armrests are now wider, too.  for 2010, the audio panel features a dual-tone gray/black color scheme with blue backlighting; and the premium stereo gets a usb interface. The multi-information display now appears against a blue background as well, matching the radio. Display functions now include a compass on non-navigation models; with navigation, bluetooth status is displayed.  otherwise the dashboard and instrument cluster remain classic honda, as in, friendly to eye and hand, with the only mildly discordant note the placement of the shift lever, sprouting from a pod suspended from the center of the dash. While neither as ergonomic as a floor-mounted lever nor as natural, in an archaic sort of way, as one mounted on the steering column, it is consistent with the emphasis on flexibility in the front seat area. In the lx and ex, the space between the front seats that might otherwise host a console and floor-mounted shift lever is dedicated to a unique, multi-use tray that when not needed folds down against the side of the passenger seat, opening a walk-through access to the rear seat. The ex-l gets a more traditional, fixed center console, with cup holders and storage space for up to 24 cds. Some of this storage space is lost on ex-l models with navigation, where the console must house the cd changer as well. As if in compensation, a digital audio-card reader is still exclusive to the navigation model.  the front seats seem a little short on thigh support. But to the limited extent the cr-v lends itself to sporty driving, the seatback side bolsters do an adequate job of keeping occupants' upper bodies in place. Not so the seat-bottom bolsters, shaped more for ease of entry and exit than for restraining posteriors. There is, however, a welcome. 2010 nissan versa review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Versatile, roomy and easy on the budget. introductionthe nissan versa is a nimble subcompact with comfort, performance, versatility, and generous interior space. It's easy on the budget to buy and easy on the budget to operate. The 2010 versa features fresh styling and an upgraded interior.  the versa is a big and roomy inside with decent head room and leg room and lots of hip room, making it a good choice for larger drivers. Its big, cushy seats are comfortable. Back-seat passengers will find rear-seat leg room as good as that in larger cars and suvs. All three are subcompacts designed with tall rooflines for increased interior comfort and visibility. All models have a new grille and wheels, and revised interior fabrics and finishes. The sl hatchback model gets sport front and rear fascias, body side sills, fog lights, and rear spoiler as standard equipment. An optional navigation system is being offered. Other changes for 2010 include auxiliary input added to the base audio system; interface system for ipod added to the upgraded radio.  most models come with a 1. 8-liter engine, though the stripper sedan model comes with a 1. 6-liter engine.  fuel economy for the nissan versa depends on the powertrain. Best is the versa sl with cvt (continuously variable transmission) with an epa-estimated 28/34 mpg city/highway. It comes with air conditioning (which can be deleted for a savings of $1,000), pre-wiring for audio. Anti-lock brakes are optional 250). The hatchback features a 60/40 split folding rear seat. Options include a power plus package 930) with power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, cruise control, door armrest pads, rear-door map pockets, and automatic door locks; and vehicle dynamic control with traction control 370).  versa sl sedan 16,100) and sl hatchback 16,530) are fitted with the xtronic continuously variable transmission (cvt). Versa sl models are upgraded with premium woven seat fabric, a more adjustable driver's seat, split folding rear seats, center armrests front and rear, the power plus package, a 180-watt stereo with an in-dash six-cd changer and mp3 capability, and 15-inch machined alloy wheels.  a convenience package for the versa sl sedan 650) includes an intelligent key system, bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and steering wheel-mounted audio controls. A premium package for the sl hatchback 980) includes everything from the convenience package plus 16-inch alloy wheels. A moonroof package 600) for the sl hatchback adds a power glass sunroof and illuminated visor vanity mirrors. Both sl models are also available with the nav/sat radio 610), which includes a navigation system with five-inch screen and xm satellite radio.  accessories include splash guards 110), floor mats 155), auto-dimming inside mirror 125), and aluminum kick plates 130). A rear roof spoiler 250) and a new cargo organizer 160) can be added to the hatchback.  safety features include frontal airbags, side-impact airbags, roof-mounted curtain airbags, front-seat active head restraints, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Anti-lock brakes (abs) with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution (ebd) are standard on the s and sl trim levels and an option 250) on the base model. walkaroundthe nissan versa looks bigger than it is. The sl hatchback, with its front spoiler below the bumper, has a more aggressive and sporty look.  at the rear ends of the sedan and hatchback things are, expectedly, much different. With the hatchback, the side edges of the tailgate angle sharply inward to clear the cat's-eye taillights. With the sedan, the taillights are different but the trunk lid still angles inward. We like the hatchback a little better, especially the sl version with its roof-mounted spoiler.  the sedan is nearly seven inches longer than the hatchback and has a more conventional rear end, with a trunk. The sedan is handsome enough, with its long, tapering sail panels.  we find the hatchback more appealing. We like its distinctive styling and it's more versatile than the sedan. interiorthe huge front seats in the nissan versa are roomy and comfortable. As with the other cars in this class, the versa driver gets lots of legroom and headroom. In terms of hip room, however, the versa is a real standout. The width and the substantial structure of the front seats may make the versa a great choice among subcompacts for big drivers. The cloth-covered seats are comfortable without being too soft and offer plenty of side support.  the back seat is particularly impressive. Even a six-footer shouldn't feel cramped as the rear seat legroom is at or near the top of the class. No hard plastics here.  the instrument pod contains three large, well-recessed gauges that are easy to read. The speedometer takes pride of place in the center and almost seems as if it is floating over the other two gauges.  controls for the dash mounted radio and cd changer are well integrated into the center stack, and although they are not very large they are easy to see and comprehend. There is a large volume knob in the center with a very visible power button. Three functional, conventional knobs operate the climate control system. All in all there's nothing fancy about any of the controls, although everything looks well finished. Two large cupholders are conveniently located under the center stack.  the optional intelligent key allows for keyless starting of the engine, something that up until now has only been available in luxury cars. We don't recommend it. Tow truck operators tell us they get a lot of calls dealing with keyless starting systems. And we don't find them a big benefit.  cargo versatility is a strong point for the hatchback. There's a generous 17. 8 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats in place. Versa sl with cvt, or continuously variable transmission, gets an epa-estimated 28/34 mpg city/highway. Nissan has been a standout in cvt technology. In addition to delivering exceptional fuel economy, it's very smooth and most drivers probably won't notice it's anything other than a regular automatic.  a cvt doesn't shift gears like an automatic transmission. Instead, a segmented belt rides up and down on cone-shaped pulleys to vary the speed ratio between the engine and the drivetrain. It works more efficiently than a traditional automatic, which is why the versa equipped with a cvt delivers such good highway mileage. Around town it has the same economy as a manual transmission, better than an automatic, in other words.  we've been pleased with the versa. It has plenty of zip and there's no problem merging into traffic on a fast free-flowing freeway. We found it not unpleasant. In regular stop-and-go traffic under slow acceleration there is no sensation other than the car moving forward smoothly with no sound or feel of shifting gears.

2002 volkswagen jetta review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. More horsepower emphasizes the jet in the jetta. introductionthe volkswagen jetta is the best-selling european import on the u. It's available in any guise. Power is up for both the 1. 8t and the vr6. Volkswagen retuned the 1. 8-liter turbocharged engine to produce 180 horsepower. The jetta is also offered as a station wagon, including the gl 2. 0l 17,650); gls 2. 0l 18,700); gls 1. 8t; glx 2. 8l vr6 25,500).  gl is the entry level, providing access to vw's build quality at a reasonable price. And the 34/49 mpg city/highway epa rating is not overstated, according to tdi owners. That's not as claustrophobic as it might seem, as the jetta has large windows. The instrument panel features a large 7500-rpm tachometer (redlined at 6500 rpm) and an optimistic 160-mph speedometer: at 80 mph the needle is straight up. The lettering is white on black in daylight, but at night with the lights on, it changes to the cool blue introduced on the new beetle. The needles and controls are illuminated in an intense red. Most love it, a few hate it. It's a must-see-before-buying item.  the interior is arranged well for the enthusiast driver. The steering wheel has a thick rim shaped well for the hand, and a grippy leather covering. It tilts and telescopes, and the driver's seat ratchets up and down as well as slides fore and aft and reclines with the turn of a knob on the base of seatback. Another twist-knob controls lumbar support. There's a driving position for everyone, without an electric motor in (or out of) sight. The twist-knob recline function allows more precise seat back angle than the more common release lever adjuster, even if it is slower and more difficult to use. Front buckets are well bolstered and deserve to be called sport seats. The hvac controls are simple and easy to use, while the buttons on the excellent monsoon audio are small and somewhat blocked by the cup holder when it's in use. Full latch anchorage systems are provided for two child safety seats as well. The rear seats fold 60/40 for extended luggage capacity, and although they don't lie completely flat, we were able to carry a complete mountain bike (with front wheel dismounted) when the kid decided she wanted it at college after all. The trunk's short lid does open wide, limiting access somewhat, but the trunk is big for this size of car and, with its articulated hinges, it's all usable space.  all-around vision is good, with small pillars and well-placed mirrors. interiorthe jetta looks just as expensive inside as it does outside. The jetta, especially with the 17-inch wheels, 45-series performance tires and sport suspension, gobbles up the twisties like a seven-year old goes after fruit loops. The jetta has lots of lateral grip and the stability to utilize it. Shock absorber damping is compliant but firm, allowing the suspension to react to a bump in mid-corner and be done with it. Transients, left to right and back again, are equally well handled. While the front-drive jetta does not have the precise handling of, say, a bmw, it does not have near the price, either.  the turbocharged engine slings the front-wheel-drive jetta forward with authority. Despite a claim from vw that sound deadening was added to the turbocharger, a faint whistle can be heard as the turbo spools up. Turbo addicts will enjoy it, others won't notice. Instead, the jetta has a broad torque spread. Otherwise the engine bogs for what seems like an eternity as that truck looms in the rear view mirror. The engine, once up on the turbo, is hoot for enthusiast driving, willing to rev smoothly to redline with a clean mechanical sound. It'll blast out of a toll plaza.  the shifter's throw is on the long side, front to back, but close side to side. It's precise and has little slop, and is enjoyable to use, with even clutch take-up with a well-weighted pedal. There is an optional 5-speed automatic that has the porsche-developed tiptronic manual-shifting system, the only car in the class so equipped.  the engine is not just for sporting driving

2008 chevrolet cobalt review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Built on a strong, stiff platform, it delivers crisp handling and a smooth ride. And with its expressive styling and all-around competence, the cobalt competes effectively against the honda civic, toyota corolla, and ford focus. Xm satellite radio is now standard, along with am/fm/cd stereo with an auxiliary input jack. Standard safety features now include head-curtain airbags and a tire-pressure monitor. New for 2008 is standard xm satellite radio. These are still fairly basic models, though, with wind-up windows and manually operated mirrors. Tires are 195/60 on 15-inch steel wheels. And options are limited.  the lt 14,375) sedan and coupe get power windows and door locks, plus upgraded upholstery, adjustable lumbar support for the driver, and some other amenities. Lt's with the neutral interior color now feature woodgrain trim. Options expand to include cruise control 275), sunroof 750), six-disc cd changer 295), seven-speaker pioneer audio 295), remote vehicle starter 190, and requires automatic transmission), heated leather seats 695), and a leather-wrapped steering wheel 195).  an option package for lt called 2lt 1295) bundles abs; stabilitrak; color-keyed bodyside moldings; 205/55r16 tires on more stylish, plastic-faced wheels; cruise control; onstar; and a trunk cargo net.  replacing last year's sport package is the new performance appearance package 795), which includes a rear spoiler, 16-inch aluminum wheels, stainless steel exhaust with chrome tips, fog lamps, white-face gauges, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter knob. A new chrome exterior package is available on lt sedans and includes a chrome grille, bodyside moldings and door handles.    cobalt sport 18,875) replaces last year's cobalt ss. The sport comes in coupe and sedan body styles. In addition to the bigger engine, beefed-up chassis, abs brakes and stabilitrak, sport makes the seven-speaker stereo standard, along with a leather-wrapped shift knob and leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise controls. Otherwise, standard equipment and options are similar to the lt.  safety features include dual-stage front air bags, front seatbelt pre-tensioners, rear center shoulder belts, and the latch child seat retention system. Head-curtain side airbags are now standard on all models, as is a tire pressure monitor. Sport and 2lt come with stabilitrak electronic stability control. Anti-lock brakes (abs) are also standard on sport and 2lt, optional 400) on 1lt and ls; the system includes traction control on cobalts with automatic transmission. Onstar is standard on 2lt and sport, and optional 295) on 1lt. For 2008 it includes the general motors advanced automatic crash notification (aacn) system, making crash data available to participating 911 centers to help them dispatch the appropriate live-saving personnel and equipment. walkaroundthe chevy cobalt is built on gm's delta platform, which it shares with the domestic saturn astra and european-market opel astra. But with its single-bar grille and bowtie emblem, cobalt looks like a proper chevrolet small car right down to its shoes and socks.  body panel fits are extremely tight. So tight, in fact, that there are no rubber trim gaskets around cobalt's compound complex headlamps.  the fastback coupe bears a resemblance to the cavalier it replaced in 2005, right down to its high, rounded tail and triangular rear quarter windows; though in fact cobalt shares little with its predecessor but its looks.  the cobalt sedan looks less like its curvier cavalier ancestor, and more like a contemporary small sedan, with a tall roofline and short, chunky tail.  the coupe weighs about 50 pounds less than the sedan, although it's doubtful anyone but a professional race driver would feel the difference on the road. Same for the sedan's slightly better front-to-rear balance: 59/41 vs. 60/40 for the coupe.    cobalt is longer, wider and lower than most of its direct competitors and its interior dimensions and trunk capacity are comparable for the class. interiorthe design theme inside the cobalt is simple and straightforward. Materials are decent and the fit and finish is good. Overall, it's comparable for the class. There's just enough chrome trim here and there on knobs and instruments to brighten things up without a lot of glare from the shiny parts. Instruments are large, well placed, and easy to read, with nice graphic treatment throughout.  cobalt uses different seats in the different trim levels, each with detail changes in foam, padding and trim. We found plenty of fore/aft and rake adjustment for a 6-foot, 4-inch driver, plus seat height adjustment with a ratcheting handle. The lt seats were very comfortable and grabbed us in the fast corners exactly where we needed to be grabbed and held. Even better were the optional leather-trimmed seats, which come with electric heat.  the available pioneer seven-speaker sound system with the delphi am/fm/cd delivers good sound and includes a huge subwoofer mounted on the left side trunk wall. For 2008, all cobalts now come with xm satellite radio.  the heating, ventilation and defroster system worked quickly and intuitively.  the ls comes with manually operated windows. The urethane steering wheel that comes on ls and lt models feels cheap. The leather-wrapped wheel that's standard on sport and optional on lt is much nicer.  rear-seat passengers pay a price for the coupe's sporty looks. Headroom, legroom, and hip room are reduced by 2 inches, 1. 5 inches, and 3. 5 inches, respectively; enough to make the difference between a comfortable place for adults and one best left to pre-adolescents. Cobalt does not use space-eating gooseneck hinges on its decklid, opting instead for simple outside corner hinges and two hydraulic assist struts. The coupe has an even smaller trunk opening, making it difficult to stow a thick suitcase. A 60/40-split, fold-down rear seat with a trunk pass-through feature adds utility to both sedan and coupe. driving impressionthe chevrolet cobalt is quite pleasant to drive, especially the sport model. It's quiet for a car that retails for less than $20,000. Chevrolet put considerable effort into special door seals, sandwich steel panels, thick carpets and pads, noise blockers and noise absorbers throughout the front, middle and rear of the car. As a result, normal front-seat conversation is possible at speeds above 90 mph.  the 2. 2-liter engine, which is rated at 148 horsepower is smooth, but does not feel powerful until it's revving high. The 171 developed by its 2. 4-liter engine is 16 percent more than the base engine produces. With 167 pound-feet of torque at 4500 rpm, the sport delivers only about 10 percent more torque than the base ls/lt. But then the 2. 4 has variable valve timing, which the 2. 2 does not, so the bigger engine should provide more flexibility across the whole rpm spectrum. That should make it easier to drive around town.  the downside of the sport's 2. 4-liter engine is that its slightly higher compression ratio (10. 4:1, vs. 10. 0) pushes it over the line to where it needs premium fuel to perfo.
